Why use OSX Packages instead of raw files?
Much like RedHat Linux and it's RPM (ReadHat Package Manager) system The MAC OSX Installer keeps track of What packages and files were installed in the system and keeps them intact when System Upgrades and other packages are installed.(ls /Library/Receipts in the Terminal)
The Other benefit is that if the Package was made right it will provide an upgrade path that is managed by the Installer system.
